Kizik Shoes Review | An MS Specialist’s Perspective

MS Product Reviews

When it comes to an everyday routine with MS, the little things can sometimes feel the most difficult. While everyone’s symptoms are unique, one of the most common complaints I hear as a physical therapist is difficulty with shoes. The entire process, from putting on the shoes to tying the laces, can prove a lot harder said than done, but there’s a solution designed to help: Kizik shoes.

Hey there, I’m Dr. Gretchen Hawley - physical therapist and MS-certified specialist. Let’s not sugar coat it. Living with MS can be incredibly overwhelming and frustrating. I understand the constant struggle of searching for therapies that actually make a difference and coming up short each time. That’s why I’ve dedicated my career to understanding how MS works and what we, as physical therapists and specialists, can do differently to help people see real, lasting progress.

My mission is to educate and equip those living with MS to take control of their health by providing knowledge and tools specially designed to help them regain mobility, balance, and independence — no matter where they’re starting from. While each journey is unique, progress is always possible. I'm excited for you to join our compassionate community and am honored you’re here!

Today, I'll be sharing my perspective on Kizik shoes - a brand gaining a ton of attention in the MS community for its hands-free design. Although I’m in full support of anything that helps make daily life easier, as a MS specialist and physical therapist, there are a few issues people experiencing MS need to consider.

What Are Kizik Shoes?

  • Hands-free shoe design

  • Eliminates bending down to tie laces

  • Opens wide and snaps back into place

  • Makes putting on shoes easier for those with mobility issues!

Kizik Shoes have gained popularity for their hands-free design, eliminating the need for traditional laces or closures. The unique feature lies in their patented technology, which allows the shoes to open wide when you step into them and then snap back into place. This design aims to simplify the process of putting on shoes, eliminating the need to bend over or using your hands to fasten or tie laces, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions affecting mobility, such as MS.

What I Like As An MS Specialist

As a physical therapist and MS specialist, the center of my job revolves around increasing the comfort of my patients to continue daily activities without pain or discomfort. I tread very lightly on recommending products or solutions because every person experiencing MS has different symptoms, so instead here is a list of what I like about Kizik shoes:

They Look Like Your Average Sneaker

One of the aspects I appreciate about Kizik Shoes is their aesthetically pleasing design. Despite the innovative technology in the shoes, they look like the normal, stylish sneakers we all want to wear. This is a huge plus for individuals with MS who often desire footwear that not only serves a functional purpose, but allows them to look and feel their best at the same time.

Provide Support and Balance

Support and balance are critical for individuals experiencing MS, as muscle weakness and coordination issues are more than common symptoms. Kizik Shoes have a snap-back, providing increased stability to the back of foot and balancing weight as you take a step. This can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with balance, creating a more confident and safer walking experience.

Excellent Soles

The soles of Kizik Shoes are designed with traction and shock absorption in mind. This is a crucial feature for anyone experiencing MS who may experience difficulty in lifting their feet. The way the soles are designed allow for a stable walking experience, enhancing overall mobility.

My Concern As A MS Specialist

Although I think these shoes are a great solution if you’re experiencing difficulty with the daily task of shoes, as an MS specialist they can cause issues. Here’s what I dislike about Kizik shoes:

Stops Necessary (Yet Challenging Movement)

One of my biggest concerns as an MS specialist is that Kizik Shoes, by simplifying the process of putting on shoes, may inadvertently contribute to a reduction in challenging  movements that can be essential for maintaining joint flexibility, range of motion, and strength. While the hands-free design is undoubtedly convenient, it's important to strike a balance to ensure that users still engage in necessary movements and exercises to promote joint and muscle health.

Kizik Shoes Review: Wrap Up

Overall, I think Kizik shoes are a great solution for people experiencing MS, or just looking to walk in their home or outdoors, but only if it’s combined with intentional exercises to strengthen the muscles needed to bend down and put on shoes. I’m all for any and all solutions that make day-to-day life easier, especially when they’re designed to make wearers feel comfortable and confident.

If you feel yourself needing a solution like Kizik shoes - go for it! That being said, I HIGHLY recommend looking into my Free 5 Day MS Strength Challenge as well! Combined together, you can set yourself up for both the present and future.
